Topstep Rules Explained (2026): Max Loss, Consistency Target and Daily Loss Limit

8 min read

Most traders who fail a Topstep Trading Combine don't fail because their strategy stopped working. They fail because they broke a rule they didn't fully understand: the drawdown moved up and they didn't notice, or one big day quietly raised their profit target.

This guide explains every Trading Combine rule in plain English, with examples. All numbers come from Topstep's own Help Center, checked on October 19, 2026. Topstep updates its rules from time to time, so always confirm on help.topstep.com before you trade.

The short version

In the Trading Combine you have one rule and two objectives:

  • Rule: never let your balance hit the Maximum Loss Limit (MLL).
  • Objective 1: reach your Profit Target.
  • Objective 2: meet the Consistency Target: your best day must stay at or below 55% of your total profit.

On top of that, there's a maximum position size, and an optional Daily Loss Limit.

  • $50K: Profit Target $3,000, Max Loss Limit $2,000, best day must stay under $1,650, max 5 minis / 50 micros.
  • $100K: Profit Target $6,000, Max Loss Limit $3,000, best day must stay under $3,300, max 10 minis / 100 micros.
  • $150K: Profit Target $9,000, Max Loss Limit $4,500, best day must stay under $4,950, max 15 minis / 150 micros.

Rule 1: The Maximum Loss Limit (Topstep's trailing drawdown)

The MLL is the lowest your balance is allowed to go. On a $50K Combine you start at $50,000 and your MLL starts at $48,000.

The key word is trailing. Your MLL moves up when your end-of-day balance makes a new high. It never moves down. Once it reaches your starting balance, it locks there.

Example ($50K Combine):

  • Start: balance $50,000, MLL $48,000.
  • Day 1: you make $500. Balance $50,500. MLL trails up to $48,500.
  • Day 2: you lose $500. Balance back to $50,000. MLL stays at $48,500.

So after a good day and a bad day, you're back at your starting balance, but your room to lose shrank from $2,000 to $1,500. This is the part that surprises people.

Three more things to know:

  • The MLL is monitored in real time, and unrealized P&L counts. If an open trade drags you to the limit, the account is liquidated right then.
  • It updates at the end of each trading day. Topstep's trading day runs from 5:00 PM CT to 3:10 PM CT the next day.
  • In the Combine, breaking it means you're out for the day and the account is no longer eligible for funding until you Reset.

Rule 2: The Consistency Target (55%)

Topstep doesn't want one lucky spike day. Your best single day must be at or below 55% of your total profit. It's a hard line, with no rounding and no buffer.

Formula: Best day profit ÷ Total profit = Best day %

Example ($50K, $3,000 target): your best day is $1,600. $1,600 ÷ $3,000 = 53%. ✅ You pass the consistency check.

What happens if your best day is too big?

You don't fail. Your profit target goes up. Topstep's formula is: Best day ÷ 0.55 = new total profit needed.

  • Best day $1,800 → $1,800 ÷ 0.55 = $3,273 needed, instead of $3,000.
  • Best day $2,200 → $4,000 needed.

Two traps

  1. Losses don't reset your best day. If your best day was $1,800 and you then lose money, your best day is still $1,800.
  2. You can't fix it on the same day. Your best day keeps updating until it locks at 3:10 PM CT. Trading more today only makes today bigger and pushes the target up again. The rest of the profit has to come on other days.

This is why "I'll just keep going while I'm hot" is one of the most expensive habits in a Combine.

Rule 3: The Daily Loss Limit (optional)

In the Trading Combine, the Daily Loss Limit (DLL) is optional. You can add it when you buy the Combine:

  • $50K: $1,000
  • $100K: $2,000
  • $150K: $3,000

If your net P&L for the day hits it, your positions are closed, open orders are cancelled, and you're done until the next session at 5 PM CT. Hitting it is not a rule violation. Your account stays eligible.

A DLL set at purchase is fixed: you can't change it later, and it carries over to your Express Funded Account. If you don't set one at purchase, you can still add a Personal Daily Loss Limit in Risk Settings, but you can adjust or remove that one, which Topstep itself warns makes it "easier to rationalize bad habits in the moment".

Topstep also says that over 63% of traders have lost an account in a single day. A daily limit is the simplest protection against that.

Maximum position size

You can't hold more than 5 / 10 / 15 contracts (on $50K / $100K / $150K). Micros count at 10:1, so 50 micros = 5 minis. You never have to trade the maximum.

What changes after you pass (Express Funded Account)

  • Your Express Funded Account (XFA) starts at a $0 balance. "50K" is buying power, not your starting balance.
  • The MLL starts at -$2,000 (on 50K) and trails up. Once your balance reaches $2,000, it locks at $0.
  • If you choose the Consistency payout path, your largest day must be 40% or less of your total net profit, with at least 3 trading days, before you can request a payout.
  • Profits from the Combine don't carry over.

Why traders actually break these rules

Reading the rules takes 10 minutes. Following them under pressure is the hard part. In practice, the rule breaks look like this:

  • Holding a loser while it drifts toward the MLL, because "it will come back".
  • Sizing up after a loss to win it back fast (that's revenge trading).
  • Chasing a move you missed, then exiting in panic (FOMO trading).
  • Not stopping on a great day, and blowing through the 55% line.

The fastest way to stop repeating these is to look at the exact moment it happened, not at the P&L number at the end of the day.

TradeCut dashboard listing recent trades as clips

TradeCut records your trading screen in the background and saves one short clip per trade, from entry to exit, with the symbol, side, time and result. On TradingView it detects your trades by itself; NinjaTrader 8 works through an add-on.

So when a Combine day goes wrong, you open that day in the calendar and watch the trade where you held too long, or sized up after a loss. That's usually enough to never do it the same way again.

FAQ

What is the main rule of the Topstep Trading Combine?

Don't let your balance hit the Maximum Loss Limit ($2,000 / $3,000 / $4,500 below your starting balance on $50K / $100K / $150K). It trails your end-of-day high and never moves down.

Is Topstep's drawdown trailing or end-of-day?

Both, in a way. The limit itself only moves up at the end of the trading day, based on your end-of-day balance. But it's checked in real time, including open trades, so you can be liquidated in the middle of the day.

What is Topstep's consistency rule?

In the Trading Combine, your best single day must be at or below 55% of your total profit. If it's higher, your profit target rises to best day ÷ 0.55.

Can I pass the Topstep Combine in one day?

No. You need at least two trading days, and no single day can be more than 55% of your total profit.

Is the Daily Loss Limit required?

Not in the Trading Combine. It's optional there, and automatic in the Live Funded Account.

Does hitting the Daily Loss Limit fail my Combine?

No. It ends your trading for that session. Your account stays eligible.
